Wednesday, February 19th - another challenging drive to work

It's been snowing for the past couple of hours now. The temperature is currently -3 with some wind, and we should reach a high of 0 later but we may see up to 15 cms of snow by lunchtime. The radio was saying the roads were not the greatest and now I see they have closed the schools. I suppose the up side is that it should end by noon, so things should be a little better for the drive home this afternoon.

I received an email from Patti yesterday. Our Tristen has finally won a speedskating medal. He's been working away at it for a while but has yet to make it to the top three. It finally happened this weekend and as you can see, he's a pretty proud little boy. Well done, Tristen!

On Monday, I forgot to mention our Valentine's Dinner. It was the first time the Salvation Army held this event and I think the hope is to make it an annual one. The church was done up beautifully. They had removed all the chairs (one of the pluses of not having fixed pews) and were replaced by round tables that sat 8 people. White table cloths and red flowers on the tables set a lovely Valentine's theme. The meal was excellently prepared by the staff and students of the culinary institute. But he highlight of the evening came before any food arrived. When we sat down, there was a printed program at each place. Among the list of speakers was a name that Lloyd recognized as the same name of someone he went to high school with. He went and asked Jamie to point this person out to him. But Lloyd came back and sat down and said he didn't look at all familiar. I asked when was the last time he'd seen him - over 40 years ago no doubt. I also suggested that perhaps he didn't quite look the same as he did 40 years ago either. So he went over and spoke to this fellow, and sure enough, it was indeed the old school mate.

After dinner he and his wife joined Lloyd and I for coffee at Tim's so they could catch up. They now live in Halifax and are on the island fairly frequently. So the next time they are here and have a bit of spare time, they are coming to have dinner with us. They were a very nice couple and I really enjoyed meeting them and look forward to them visiting again. It really is a small world - but then again I suppose it's not really that far from Halifax to St. Johns. The interesting part for me was that they have traveled and lived all across the country over the years and they spent 5 years in a little town in Ontario - Acton - which happens to be where I went to high school. So the world just got a whole lot smaller.
