It's raining and 4 degrees but I don't care! In a couple of days I will be in Tucson, where the temperatures this week have been in the high 20's. I know it will be hot but it's a dry heat so there won't be any humidity to contend with. One thought though, I have no idea what happens with hot flashes in that heat? Do you get even hotter or do you even know when they occur? Hmmmmm , something to find out.
Last night I got to stay up late and watch TV till midnight. I always miss Private Practice cause it doesn't come on till 11:00 so that's way too late for me, but I was able to stay up as I didn't have to get up so early this morning. Brenda came over last night as well and I was able to broaden her culinary horizons just a tiny bit. On my way home last night I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a salad for supper and I saw some plantains and they just spoke to me! So I bought one and brought it home. I was cooking it when Brenda came in, so we had fried plantain with brown sugar and ice cream. I did cook them a little too long in the brown sugar and butter so the sugar carmelized and when it got cold it was crunchy, but who knew that's one of Brenda's favorite things. So she was kind enough to eat it all up.
I'm excited about our trip. It will be nice to spend some relaxing time together. I've been to Ontario 3 times since I got here and each time has been really busy. When Lloyd comes down here it's always a busy time for him to get stuff done around the house, so we really haven't had any time in the last year to just chill out.
It's hard to believe that today is the one year anniversary of our buying the house. This date last year was warm and sunny. Then the next day was just like today- cold and wet. I remember James and I driving in beautiful weather on the 30th all the way from Brockville, picking up the dog in Montreal, and James walking him every time we stopped. We both really enjoyed that trip.
I love to travel, and I must admit, we are so fortunate to have Patti working for Air Canada. That has afforded us the opportunity to take some amazing trips. Lloyd sent me a couple of amazing pictures he took in Africa. One of them I couldn't figure out how to save. I need a geek to show me how. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of them.
We've been fortunate to have spent two weeks in Australia, a week in Spain, London, New York, San Francisco, and every trip has been amazing. My favorite city of all those I've visited is London. I've been there 5 times and I love it there. I've been there often enough that I know my way around, although London proper is really quite small. But the tube system is absolutely amazing. There are so many lines that take you all around the outlying area. The interesting thing is the lines are all stacked up on top of one another so there are these amazing escalators that take you long distances under the ground. Then you take a train, get off at your stop, and depending on what line you're taking next, it's back down another escalator. I don't know the stats on how far underground the bottom tunnel is but I know it's a long way. I love the tube because it's so efficient and you can get absolutely anywhere. If you buy a pass for the number of days you're there for, you just insert your card into the machine and go. Interestingly enough, British people complain about it being inefficient. I can't imagine how they would cope here in Canada. Our public transit systems are so inadequate when you compare them to what they have in London.
Yesterday I was poking around on line looking for something and I came across this video. It totally brought back so many memories of trips on the tube, and I've been on this particular line but anyone who knows me well,
CAN YOU IMAGINE IF I'D BEEN ON THIS TRAIN????? -click on the arrow to play and you'll see what I mean.
It's two degrees as I write this, slightly showery, but no snow. Thank goodness for that. I'm hoping that by the time I get back it will be warmer.
Yesterday I received a comment from Meghan(1) and she's getting into gardening. How great is that. I plan to plant a small garden this summer and probably a few flowers as well and I'm the first one to admit I don't know much about it. Yesterday morning I picked up a magazine at the Superstore that you will have to get, Meghan. It's a Canadian Living special issue. Unlike most special issues that run $10.00 or more, this one is only $5.95 and it's called "Grow it, Eat it" It has gardening tips that are great for newbie gardeners, and lots of recipes for using the plants you grow. There's some really yummy looking recipes in there and I think you'll love it. I thought of you right away when I read your comment.
Your mom's comment is so on the money - just imagine how much trouble we could get into if you lived here! We'll just have to get together once in a while when you're visiting the island.
Yesterday one of the girls at work invited me to join her and two of her friends for supper at Boston Pizza. It was really nice to be included. When she invited me she suggested I might like to join them if I'm going to be bored last night. That got me to thinking. I can honestly say that I have never been bored the entire time I've been here. I guess I'm just good at keeping myself busy. When I got home I finished up my laundry then found an Anne Murray special on TV. I think it's been on before but I've not seen it. It was a little ironic to find it on TV as I was finishing packing earlier in the evening and looking for a book to take with me on the plane. Lloyd gave me a book at Christmas written by Anne Murray, a bit of an autobiography. I was flipping through it and looking at the pictures before I put it into my suitcase. There were photos of all the women she had sang duets with on one of her albums and it turns out that's what the program was about. Now it will be really nice to read the book with the image of them singing together on TV.
I used to listen to her music a lot and I love some of her songs from about 20 years ago. I'd forgotten how much I liked some of them so after the show I copied some of them off CD's onto my mp3 player. I'm going to take it with me for listening to while I'm killing time in airports on my way to Toronto.
I'm always amazed at how music can conjure up memories of things long ago and since forgotten. I was listening the the Anne Murray song "Can I have this dance for the rest of my life" and I think Lloyd and I danced to that one the night we met at the Nottawasaga Inn. Who knew it would come true!
Today should be a fairly good day. Tracey is away, so I can finish up a few things that are on my desk before I leave. I could have gotten them done yesterday but there's a couple of things that I need input from other people. So I spent a lot of time yesterday waiting for people to get to me with information I need. Hopefully I'll get all that early today and I can leave a clean desk! But I can only imagine what it's going to look like when I get back.
This morning is cool and very wet. But lets hope that's all it will be. Yesterday the radio was predicting 2 to 4 cm of snow for tonight. Let's hope they're wrong. Although we know it won't last if it does come, we really don't want to have to haul out the boots again this year. Last night I stayed home (for a change!) and worked on compiling the results from our admin day. Brenda also chose to stay at home and finish planting her flower beds. Tonight she has a wrap up meeting with the ladies that organized Dave's party. So I will finish up a few things and re-pack my suitcase. My plan was to take my carry on bag, but I also want to take my laptop so I will have to check my bag. I was taking two small bags but the laptop bag would be three, so I'll just take my bigger bag and my laptop and a purse. In the long run it's likely better anyway, as I will likely have things to bring back with me - I usually do when I travel! Meghan (1), you're going to like this part of the story. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching TV and one of those cake challenges was on. There were several teams of three ladies decorating massive wedding themed cakes. They were showing this lady working on a cake at the front but what caught my eye was in the background. There, sitting on the counter was a cricut machine. Now if you don't know what a cricut is, it's a die cutting machine used by scrapbookers. Your mom has seen mine in action as we cut out some words for a card she was making. Well, as this program unfolded, they showed the woman using the cricut to cut out sheets of fondant. With a cricut you can cut out endless shapes in any size you like. I was totally fascinated as she cut out intricate lace patterns on sheets of white fondant and carefully layed them over a pastel base. It was absolutely amazing and of course it set off all kinds of ideas. What a great idea! But, how would you do that?
Well, last night I was flipping through the TV listings and there on the shopping network was the Cricut Cake machine. It's not quite the same as the paper cutting machine for obvious reasons, and you can't cut paper with it, but, boy what a job it did with rolled out fondant. There was a package for $389.00 but you had the option of paying six monthly payments of $65.00. It took every ounce of strength to not go to the phone and order one. They were actually just taking pre-orders as they aren't available in Canada yet. They don't call me the gadget queen for nothing - and this would be the ultimate gadget. But something to think about in the future. They had some amazing cakes on display with beautiful, intricate designs and lettering on them. It just boggles the mind what one could do!
I went on line this morning to read some consumer reviews and there seems to be a bit of a learning curve with it in terms of the right thickness, etc of icing to use, but I think it might be easier if you've already got experience using the cricut to cut out paper. One of the great features is it uses the same design cartridges as the paper machine and they are interchangeable so I could use the ones I already have besides the two that come with it. Being as the cartridges retail for around $90 each when they're not on sale, the price for the package doesn't seem too bad. (See, I'm already trying to justify it and I haven't even bought it yet!)
Yesterday was our Administrative Professionals Workshop and it was a huge success! We had 60 guests and 4 vendors. We received 48 evaluations back at the end of the day and to say that our guests were happy with their day is an understatement. Everyone loved the speakers, the food, the venue, and the vendors. There were a couple of comments regarding room temperature, parking but those are things that were out of our control but even then some thought parking and was a problem while some liked the location for the parking. Just goes to show that you can't please everyone, but for the most part, it was a great day.
The vendors all spoke to me before they left - they felt they had done well, they had made good contacts and all asked to be sure and invite them back again next year. That speaks volumes, I think.
Our speakers did an amazing job. Everyone loved Rosita, Gretha got great reviews as did Chris. All in all, I think the PEI chapter can give itself a big pat on the back for a job well done!
Now it's back to work for three days then off again to Tucson. It's going to be a busy week as I know both Rosie and Tracey have projects lined up for me that are fairly time sensitive.
Last night Brenda and went for a walk. We went out Dromore Road to Old Bob Laird Road, down to Joey's Road and back up to my place. It took about an hour and 20 minutes. Not bad for early in our efforts. I likely won't be walking at lunch this week as I have too much to do, so I usually just eat at my desk.
We had such a nice day out on the river the other day, it will be nice once I get back as it might be a little warmer. It will be surprising how much change there will be in 10 days here at this time of year. When I get back, the buds will be out more on the trees and the grass will likely need to be cut by then!
Tonight I have to remember to call to order the wood. I'll have to check with Brenda to see if the road restrictions are lifted yet. In spring when the roads are too soft, trucks are not allowed on them but I haven't heard yet if it's okay. I'm sure Bennet will know.
I was commenting to Brenda last night, that it's a little ironic that this Friday is the one year anniversary of owning the house, and I'm headed back to Guelph. I should be having a party here! I guess we'll just have to celebrate in Ontario. But I'll be the only one with anything to celebrate!
It's Monday morning and all is well with the world! Lloyd made it home, on schedule, which totally surprised everyone. It seems that one of the advantages of all the delays is that some of the folks who were booked on his flight still hadn't gotten to Frankfurt, leaving open seats for stand by's. He and Jan had a wonderful time by the sounds of things. I'm still waiting for him to email some photos so I can share them here.
Friday feast was fit for a king! Lobster sandwiches on freshly baked home made buns - does it get any better than that??? I don't think so. Followed by freshly baked chocolate chip oatmeal cookies,it was truly a feast! What a great way to end the week. Saturday was pretty relaxed, I went into town in the morning and did a couple of errands, then back home. It was sunny and mild, a perfect day to spend a bit of time outside raking up the tiny branches that have fallen off the trees. I also replenished my wood supply inside, and I now have all the wood brought in. The pile outside is gone. So I'm being a bit more selective about when I light the fire. I remember last year that May was quite chilly at times and it would have been great to be able to put on a fire to take the chill off.
Saturday evening I went over to Brenda's and we went for a walk to the back of their fields. It's 1 1/4 miles to the back and a little way across to the road, then back so we probably walked close to 3 miles in total. We took the dog with us and he had a great time. We stopped at her house after for a bit of cheese and crackers, washed down with a little white wine. Cooper had a nap in the car - he was tired after running around outside all day and then our long walk.
Sunday morning dawned beautifully. The sun was shining and it was warm quite early. So time to get out the kayaks! We headed out to Johnson's River. It was so nice to be able to get back out again.
I did take some pictures but forgot to bring my camera with me this morning. I left the house at 6:30 so I could get some coffee before I head over to the Rodd Charlottetown. We have our admin day today. Yesterday afternoon we all got together to set up the room and fill the goody bags. Rosita came down and helped us, then we all went out to Gahan House for supper. By the time we were done there it was after 7:00.
I picked up some new decongestants yesterday and the pharmacist told me that some of the manufacturers had changed their formulas and were using a different active ingredient that isn't as strong. That would probably explain why what I've used for a long time no longer is so effective. So she suggested something else and we'll see how that works. This stuffed up thing is really starting to get annoying - both for me and everyone around me. It will be interesting to see how I am in Arizona.
Can you believe it? It's sunny again this morning and the temperature is going up to 14 today. The sun has shone almost non-stop since Jana left. It's hard to be frustrated with the sun, but the timing sure sucked last weekend! This one is supposed to be better. I hope to get outside and do some more work out there. I do have to come into town on Saturday and seek out some straw hats. There are four of us going to Regina and I suggested that we all wear "Anne" hats. One girl is all for it, but the other two suggest they may need some alcohol first. I reminded them that they'll be part of the Grand River Chapter out there so that shouldn't be a problem. I have to find 4 hats, all the same and then pick up some yarn to make the hair. I'll glue it on with the glue gun and see how it looks. If we're not careful, this could turn into a party!
I got a really nice email from Jana yesterday. I would love to have been there to see the look on Kay and Mike and Jackie's faces when she told them where she spent the weekend. None of them had any idea where she was.
"I occasionally sit back for a bit and remember the relaxing down-time I had with you on Sunday and Monday. I think about the peaceful way of the Island and understand why it drew you there.
And a huge THANK YOU to you for having me! It was so great to see you and see your new surroundings. You sure do fit in! And I said this to Mike , Kay & Jackie, that you are “at home” in PEI ."
I love the fact that she gets it. She understands why I'm here and why I love it so much. I know this quiet way of life(although you couldn't call the last week quiet) isn't for everyone, but it sure works for me. She says she mentioned Fall Flavours to Scott and he thought it would be fun. So, we may see them again before the year is up! That would be great.
Things at work are very busy right now, leading up to convocation. I will be away for that week, unfortunately, as I had booked the holiday when I thought I was going to be done at the end of April. With any luck, I'll have the chance to experience it next year.
I had a nice email chat yesterday with the fellow who manages facilities. He plays fiddle at the Old Triangle on Sunday afternoons. He was suggesting that we come out more to hear them play, but I told him Sunday afternoons just don't work for me. If the weather is good I'm going to be out doing something like riding my bicycle or in my kayak. He reminded me that they also play on Monday nights at the BIS hall. SO that may be something we need to explore some Monday evening.
It's Friday Feast day today so I will have to call Brenda when I get to work and see what we're doing this week, if time permits for them. I know they are gearing up to plant crops and I'm sure when the weather is going to be this nice, they are going to take full advantage of it.
Other than that, nothing major going on this weekend, although I do need to think about getting some summer clothes out as I leave on vacation one week from today. Oh my gosh, I just looked at the weather network for Tuscon, and it's going to be 19 degrees and raining today but then the sun comes out and by Monday it will be 30 degrees. Guess I'd better get some shorts out of winter storage! It's going to be quite a shock to my system, that hasn't been exposed to those kinds of temperatures for quite a while. Late breaking news: Brenda just called to tell me that Jana made the paper. There's an article in the paper today about the Jesse Cook show and it mentions "the woman who flew all the way in from Toronto" so I will have to get that one for her and send it.
And as for Friday Feast, Brenda reminded me that she has a quite a few lobsters in the freezer left from last year and in one more week it will be lobster season again. So it will be lobster sandwiches for supper tonight! I can't wait. We just have to do what we have to do.
First, I must apologize for again being late. I have a meeting this morning downtown at 9:00 so am late getting to Timothy's. As some of you will see by reading the comments posted yesterday. I've thrown some people's mornings off by varying my routine. Gosh, this is just like in the real journalism world, I have a deadline to reach! Just kidding, but it really pleases me that some folks out there are looking forward to reading my drivel.
I just had a look at yesterdays and since I wrote it in two segments, but didn't take the time to read through it at the end, I realize I told you about the cruise ships twice. No, I wasn't on drugs when I wrote it but I can understand why you might think I was. I've since gone in and fixed it. Just goes to prove, you should never hit "send" without being sure of what you're sending.
Finally a quiet evening. Brenda tells me that at supper last night Bernie asked her "So, what are you and Sandy doing tonight?" Surprise, surprise, we went for a walk. It turned out to be a lovely day, sunny and no wind. So after supper she came over to my place and we went for a walk on Dromore Road. Good choice as I think we saw two cars the entire time. Two girls at work are walking at lunch and I'm meant to be joining them but I was working on something yesterday that couldn't wait so I wasn't able to go. Hopefully I can today. We can catch the trail in behind the University and take it right up to the mall. The return trip takes 30 minutes but I suspect after a few weeks, it will be even quicker.
This morning I measured the distance from my house to Brenda's and it was 7.8 km to the end of her driveway. She did well to do that in an hour and a half, in the rain. I have some serious training to do to catch up with her.
We are busy getting ready for our administrative assistants day on Monday. I'm meeting with one of the speakers this morning and I've confirmed numbers and such with the hotel. We'll be going in on Sunday afternoon to set up the room and put the goody bags together. Hopefully all will go well. I will try to come into town early on Monday morning and have my coffee before I head over to the hotel at 7:00. Can't let down my loyal followers! That's what gets me out of bed on a bad morning, so thank you for being there for me!
It seems like a non-stop round of events. As Brenda said last night, we've gotten a whole winters worth of entertainment in one extended weekend. Last night we went to Georgetown to see "The Men of the Deeps", a mens choral group comprised of Cape Breton coal miners. It was great. In spite of being quite tired by the end of the day, I really enjoyed the show. It was wonderful to hear some familiar songs and some original compositions by members of the group. I didn't know that they were formed in 1966 as a centennial project for Canada's 100th birthday in 1967. And there are still some members who have been there since the beginning. They must have been quite young to have been there so long. One of the criteria to join the group is you must have worked underground for at minimum of two years. Perhaps that's why the music is so heartfelt - they are singing from personal experience.
I was very stuffed up all evening for some reason, and I'm sure I must have drove everyone around me crazy by constantly sniffling and blowing my nose. I think I may need to change decongestants, as apparently the one I normally take isn't very effective anymore. So my apologies to all of those who were seated near me. The folks in the seats in front of us didn't return after the intermission, so I hope I didn't drive them away!
Well, spring is truly here. This morning the first cruise ship of the season was just chugging into port. And of course the sun is shining on the water as I crossed the Hillsborough bridge and we're headed for a high of 8. Jana missed it by one day! But hopefully she will come back again. I really enjoyed her being here and the three of us had such a good time on Monday night. We always got along well, but now the dynamics of our relationship has changed - she is no longer my employer and I am no longer an employee. That completely changes things. We can both behave as silly as we want and it doesn't matter - there's no professional connection anymore. We talked a little about maybe meeting in Ottawa for Bluesfest - I think that would be a blast.
I got a call from Lloyd on Friday morning to let me know that he got to South Africa. Now all we have to do is get him home. Patti is concerned that the delays may go on a long time and that when they do resume, it will take forever for him to get home. We'll just have to wait and see. She is fearful he may not be back in time to go to Phoenix. I suggested to her that the resort is booked and I think the car may be as well. I can still go. Her response was, well you could stop by and pick up a couple of kids on your way by. There's always a solution to any problem! I suppose getting stuck in a vacation destination isn't that bad a deal. It could be worse - he could have got stuck in Frankfurt!
A big thanks to the two ladies who left comments on my last post. It's great to read back and get feedback. I love that. My apologies for being late this morning but I forgot to bring my laptop inside last night and left it in the car. Unfortunately I ran out of battery before I finished. I'm staying home tonight, (for a change) so it shouldn't be an issue tomorrow.
Friday: After work, I met Brenda at the Rec Centre for the Volunteer Appreciation BBQ.I’m still so pleased to have been invited. We arrived, took off our coats, and were immediately given 2 tickets for free drinks. Let’s just say that set the tone for the next few days.Anyway, we were treated quite royally to a feast of delicious steamed mussels, baked and/or mashed potatoes, peas, carrots and chicken or steak. The steaks were huge but I managed to find a piece not quite so large. They were tender, juicy and pink inside and very yummy. Then a variety of sweets for dessert.A great time was had by all and I felt privileged to have been included in this event.
Saturday: I went into town early in the morning and got groceries, then back home to quickly put them away and back to the Rec. Centre. Brenda and her group of ladies had done an amazing job of organizing things for Dave’s party. The stage at the front of the hall was set up to look just like Dave’s store – it was remarkable. You truly thought you were in Wakelin’s again. There wasn’t a lot to do in the morning, so after a little while I went home to bake some cupcakes for the party. I had a bit of fun with those.I even had time for a wee nap before showering, changing and heading back to help set up for the party. Even that part was minimal as lots of people were bringing food so all we had to do was wait for them to arrive. And arrive they DID!We estimate there must have been at least 300 people in that hall. They just kept coming and coming. The tables were filled, the chairs that were set out along the side were filled, and then more chairs were put out. By the time the festivities got underway, it was standing room only – a real reflection of the respect that the community has for Dave and his family.
It really only hit me then just how important that store was to the area.Everyone just wanted to come out and say good bye and best wishes. It was a truly amazing night and I’m sure the family won’t forget it for quite some time. The ladies on the organizing committee are to be congratulated on a job well done! After everyone had listened to some speakers, the gifts had been given out, everyone was fed, the bar was opened and the dancing underway, I decided it was time to head out. It had been a really fun evening and I was totally shocked to get into the car and look at the clock and realize it was 12:30.I’d had no idea it was that late. Needless to say, everyone else got out of there MUCH later.
Sunday: Jana was arriving at 2:45 Sunday afternoon so I spent the morning prepping for dinner, which Brenda and Bernie were going to join us for, and just the last minute tidying. Then in to town to pick Jana up. Unfortunately, it was cold and windy, and rainy and it pretty much stayed that way for her entire trip. But after picking her up, we did a little tour of the downtown area before heading out to FortAugustus. First stop, the Bunky. She was there from the start- to hear all about the purchase of the land, the building of the bunky, and every holiday taken there, but she had no concept of just how small it is until she got here. Like most people who see it for the first time, they can’t believe that people could actually live in it, and just how much ‘stuff’ is inside.
Then on to the house. She agreed it is totally me!She was a little tired and we had a coffee to wake up, then it was time for a glass of wine- then another, then another. Brenda arrived, a little wet, having walked to my house from home, in the cold, and rain, and wind! We could not believe she did that. As a matter of fact we were still amazed each time we passed her house later, at how far it was.
We had dinner of “Sesame crusted scallops with Asian Vinaigrette”, followed by braised lamb shanks, with red wine reduction served over mashed potatoes and baby carrots and snow peas. Apple strudel, frozen yogurt, and mini butter tarts for dessert – and of course more wine!Again, a good time was had by all. There was much conversation and laughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of my friends and being able to supply the hospitality.
Monday: Again, it was cold, windy and rainy. But that didn’t stop us.First stop of the morning, was the radio station.I was a guest on Ocean 100’s community connection to talk briefly about our upcoming Administrative Professionals Day.That went well and it was very funny to have Jana with me as she took photos of me talking on the radio.Unfortunately I had forgotten the peanut butter balls I’d promised Kirk so I have to take them in later this morning.
After leaving there, we headed to Timothy’s for coffee, the out to see the sights. We drove out to Borden-Carlton to see the bridge, and we got a bit of a view, but it was so cloudy and foggy on the water you only saw a tiny portion of it.But it was interesting to tour around. We drove around down by ArgyleShores, where Mike Mitton, the company controller, rents a cottage sometimes with his family. Then we went back into town and had lunch at the Gahan House. We were suitably impressed with the seafood chowder, packed with mussel, lobster and scallops, topped off with a biscuit. We then walked up to the Cows store to get ice cream but unfortunately they were not open for the season yet. She’ll just have to come back! After leaving town we drove out to Crowbush to tour around. I had hoped to touch base with Chef Jill while I was there but the gates to the resort were still locked, however the gate into the golf course was open so we drove in. She was able to get a picture of the ocean off the course. I offered to take her to LakesideBeach so we could go walking but she declined that offer. I think the rain and 50 km winds may have been a deciding factor.
By the time we got back to the house, we were both a little tired, so a nap was in order.Upon waking, we had tea, oatmeal cookies and then it was time to get changed to go out.
We picked Brenda up a little after 5:30 and headed into town for some supper. Brenda suggested the Pilot House as it was close to the Confed Centre and it was a great choice. We sat and talked, and laughed and had a great dinner.I truly enjoyed being out with the two of them. While we walked back to the theatre we were trying to get a picture of the sign outside with Jesse Cook on it but it kept changing. A very kind young woman offered to take our picture but we’re sure she regretted her offer as it took forever for it to come back again, but her patience was finally rewarded. Then it was inside for the show.Jana and I knew we really enjoyed Jesse and his music but I was a little worried that Brenda might not be so keen on it.But I think she really enjoyed herself. Jana and I had just enough alcohol into us to make us act ever so slightly silly and being right in the middle of the front row didn’t hurt either! . I suspect we were also a source of entertainment for her as well, if not an embarrassment! We wanted to get up and dance but you can’t really do that in the first row. Fortunately Jesse instructed the entire crowd to get up for a ‘rhumba party’ and we were able to have some fun. In the middle of the show, we went out for intermission and got wine – in plastic cups with a lid and a straw that we were allowed to take back in with us – sippy cups for adults – ya gotta love it!
Talk about your middle aged groupies! After the show, we went out to the back door and waited around until everyone came out to get on the tour bus, which was parked out on Victoria Row. We finally got what we were waiting for – autographs and a photo with Jesse.Brenda wasn’t quite so caught up (someone had to have some common sense) and offered to go and get the car. But she had bought a CD and by the time we all got in the car, the music was on the stereo and the inside was warm. She did get out of the car though, to take the pictures when Jesse came out. She is such a good sport!!
We finally had what we had waited for and it was time to go home.We dropped Brenda off and headed back. It was close to 11:30 by the time we got sorted around and ready for morning, cause it was going to be an early one.My alarm was set for 4:10 this morning but I was awake at 4:00.It’s going to be a long day today, as Brenda and I are talking about going out tonight to hear the “Men of the Deeps” in Georgetown.I’ve seen them on TV but never in person, and neither has she. So we’ll go and expand our music repertoire even further.
Those were Patti's exact words when I talked to her yesterday. She had heard about the volcanic eruption in Iceland that had grounded flights all over Europe. She said "I think this family's cursed. Whenever we try to fly somewhere, weird things happen." Yesterday (Thursday) she was able to confirm that the airport in Frankfurt was not yet affected. But this morning the news reported that there were no flights with Air Canada to London, Paris or Frankfurt. I read on a news report that Frankfurt had been shut down this morning.I'm hoping that may just be because Frankfurt is a hub and hundreds of flights leave from there to other European destinations. I haven't heard from Lloyd so I'm going on the assumption that he got out of there okay. On the other hand, I did tell him to let me know when he got there, so hopefully they are still in transit. I know they had a 4 hour drive from the airport to the resort. I'm running on the premise that no news is good news. I think if he was still sitting in the airport in Frankfurt, I'd have heard from him by now.
The up side is that they are both licensed pilots so if they do get grounded, at least they understand the reasoning behind it.
This promises to be another busy weekend. We have our pay day Friday drinks right after work, then it's off to the Rec Centre in Fort Augustus for a BBQ. It's for the volunteers who help out with functions. I kind of feel a little guilty going, as I've only volunteered a few times, but I think I'll be able to make up for that this summer. Then we are meeting at the Rec Centre tomorrow morning to set up for Dave's party. I have some shopping and baking to do for that one. Then Jana is arriving on Sunday afternoon.
I certainly can't say that I've ever been bored since I got here. Most weekends are busy and if nothing is going on, I have lots to do around the house to occupy my time. That was one of the things that I was a little worried about before I got here but that's certainly not been the case.
Well, I'm keeping it short and sweet this morning - lots to do today.
....is where Lloyd should be by now. He was to leave on a direct flight from Toronto to Frankfurt yesterday afternoon. Patti was flying last night and she called me from the airport at around 9:00 to see if I'd heard from him. It seems she asked the gate agent when she got there to check to make sure he got on the flight (it's that stand by thing). Anyway, apparently he didn't get on that one. So she was kind of concerned about where he got to. Further questioning on her part revealed that the Frankfurt flight was full so they sent him to Montreal, and from there he had a seat to Frankfurt. So we're assuming he got to Europe okay. He spends most of the day there then catches a flight tonight (whenever that is over there) to take him to Johannesburg, where he's meeting up with Jan, aka 'Dusty' . I'm sure he'll get there one way or another.
I'm still struggling with my decision to go to Regina. I keep convincing myself I'm not going because it's too expensive, but then I go to a meeting and get all fired up about it and then I want to go again. It didn't help that yesterday I received an email from one of the girls in the Cambridge Chapter about a tree planting ceremony for our friend Angie, who died in October from breast cancer. I replied to all that I would be there in spirit. Of course then I get this flood of emails from everyone, "really looking forward to seeing you at CDC in Regina" - that just makes me want to go even more. I suppose now that my job has been extended till the middle of August, I can probably swing it. I just feel guilty about spending all that much money on a three day event. But then I think, this is MY trip to South Africa! I've just asked Tracey for the time off (2 days and that's not a problem) and depending on how much money we make at our Admin Day event, there may be a little assistance available there as well. So I guess I'm going to Regina!
It's quite chilly this morning, minus 5 degrees but the sun is shining. There was a really heavy layer of frost on the car this morning and tomorrow has the f-word in the forecast - FLURRIES! But I'm sure it won't amount to much.
Last night was our last IAAP meeting before our Administrative Professionals Day workshop. We have a small group who are actively working on it, but they always come out to the meetings. Our numbers are not quite where we would like them to be but they're not too bad. We have an article going into the paper this week and we're going to try to get someone on the radio to talk about it. That should push us to where we want to be.
I had a little chat with Lloyd last night. I thought I'd better touch base with him before he heads out this evening to Germany, then on to South Africa. I hope they have a really great time. It will be a wonderful experience for both of them. He's traveling with one of his flying buddies. They are going to miss him when he moves out here, and I know he'll miss that group of guys he's become such good friends with.
Yesterday I called all around to find the new Jesse Cook CD. We don't have an HMV or a Music World, staples in every mall in Ontario. There is a CD Plus in the Confederation Mall but they were out of stock. I finally found it at Indigo, of all places. So I've been listening to it in the car on my way too and from work. Tonight I must get some of his music to Brenda. I really hope she likes it. It'll be something different for her.
Speaking of something different, when I was talking to Patti the other night, she told me there was a problem with timing of their trip in the summer. Her aunt has to attend something in Ontario so they won't get here until the Monday or Tuesday after the Taylor Swift concert. Needless to say, this is of major concern to Meghan. So I think the problem might be solved if Patti can fly her out here a few days early. Then she can stay with me and we can go to the concert. We'll figure something out. She hasn't got her ticket yet, so I won't get mine until she gets hers. I know she's really looking forward to it.
It's only fitting that I should take her to her first concert. Grandma has always been the one to introduce them to the finer things in life - like music. Maybe not the worlds greatest music, but music just the same. I took James to see "We Will Rock You" and many, many years ago, I took Patti's cousin Jennifer to see the Bay City Rollers. I think she was 8 years old. Much later, at Patti's wedding, I asked the DJ ahead of time if he had a copy of "Saturday Night" by them. He made sure he did. During the reception he dedicated the song "To Sandy's niece, Jennifer" and he put the record on. Immediately Jennifer came running across the floor and gave me a big hug and said, "Oh my god, I didn't think you remembered!" How could I ever forget ! I've been to see so many of my favorite rock musicians in my life time, and the first time you see your favorites, is amazing. I never got to see the Beatles live, but I'll never forget the first time I saw Paul McCartney live. It was an unforgettable experience, even though I was in my 30's at the time. So I've made it my personal mission to be the one to take all the kids to their first concert as well. James hasn't really been to a concert yet, just a stage play, but the concert will come one day. Unfortunately the singer he really likes is dead, so that's not an option. But perhaps if Queen does play somewhere, without Freddie Mercury, we can go. I'm not sure that seeing the Wiggles live when he was 2 really counts as a concert, and besides, he doesn't really remember it anyway.
Monday night is the Jesse Cook concert and I'm really looking forward to it. One of the things Jana asked me when I was in Guelph was if I'd gotten the new CD yet. I kept putting it off, mostly because I never go to the mall. I figured I had lots of time but now it is less than a week away so I'd better get my act together. I think I'll take a lunch break today and pop over to Charlottetown Mall and see if I can pick it up there. But I should check the phone book first to a) make sure there's actually a music store there and b) that they have the CD in question. Then I need to loan Brenda a couple of his earlier ones to listen to so she is at least a little familiar with the music when we go on Monday night.
Last night I talked to Patti and the kids. They were at hockey try outs for next year. I remember this time last year. James was working really hard so that he could get picked and be done try outs in order to drive with me to PEI. When he didn't make the second cut he was in tears. We thought he was disappointed that he hadn't made that particular level, but once we got him calmed down, it turned out he was upset because he would have to keep going to try outs and wouldn't be able to drive with me to the island. But then the schedule worked out so that he could just make the trip but it meant Patti had to fly out the day after we arrived and pick him up. I remember picking her up at the airport, a really quick trip out to the new house, and then back to the airport to catch the next flight. But he was a pretty happy boy to be able to go with me. The night before I was to leave, was my going away party from work. He came with his mom and dad, then stayed and went home with me. After sleeping over we got up really early and headed out. He had a great time at the party, and spent a large part of the night sitting at the bar, conversing with Jana's husband Scott, and the bar tender. They were quite taken with him and they had a great time, mixing him non-alcoholic drinks.
Yesterday afternoon, I witnessed the most amazing thing. We don't think of pets as having certain characteristics but I saw something I've never seen before. Cooper and Scoobie are great buddies. They play together and chase each other around the yard all the time. In people terms you would call them best friends. Anyone who knows Cooper, knows that his favorite thing is a marrow bone. I buy them for him at the grocery store and keep them in the freezer. Every so often I take one out and cook it and give it to him for a treat. He will chew on a bone for literally hours on end. Once the marrow is out of it, and every conceivable scrap of meat is off of it, he will still chew for hours. He has a collection around the house, with at least one in every room because you just never know when you might need to chew of a bone. I throw some of them out once in a while, but not all of them.
I cooked him a new one on Sunday afternoon, as he hadn't had a fresh one in a while. He chewed it all evening and even after I went to bed, he was out in the hallway chewing away on his new bone. When he finally did get up on the bed, he brought the bone with him, but I took it away and put it back on the floor. He stayed put and went to sleep. First thing in the morning he jumped down off the bed, picked up his bone and headed downstairs. I went off to work as usual. When I got home, I was outside bringing some fire wood inside. He went into the house and got his new bone, and brought it outside. I thought, okay, you're going to lose that if you're not careful. Scoobie was standing outside by the shed. Cooper went straight over to him and dropped the bone in front of his nose, then kind of sniffed around a bit and walked away. Scoobie picked up the bone, but had his eyes on Cooper the whole time. Then he played with it a bit, just kind of picking it up, and tossing it around then picking it up again but never taking his eyes off Cooper. Finally after a couple of minutes he picked up the bone and went home, but he kept looking behind him to see if Cooper was following. But Cooper just stood there and watched him go, and never moved. A couple of minutes after Scoobie took the bone home, he came back without it, and then the two dogs started playing around the yard. I thought that was a really amazing thing, that Cooper would share his bone with his good friend. I always knew he has a kind heart but now I have proof!
They really can be quite amazing if we just stop and take the time to watch them for a while.
Well, it's Monday once again. It's a little chilly, only 4 degrees, and only going up to 8 or 9, but the sun is shining! What a busy weekend. Friday Feast almost turned into a party. We had Brenda's biscuits and she made delicious chocolate muffins with a cream cheese filling - YUM! We also had Thai Coconut, Ginger Chicken Soup. It's a little different taste, but it's really good and everyone liked it. We preceded that with some pan fried Chinese dumplings. Of course there was wine. Helena was there when I got there, and Jackie and Luke arrived when we were eating. Although they had already eaten they tasted some of the soup, and had some biscuits.
After they left, Brenda and I cleaned up and did the dishes, and you can imagine her shock to find that the bottle of wine was empty, and we were the only two drinking it. Seems Bernie was topping up our glasses without our even noticing. No wonder we found things so funny when we were doing the dishes. Then it was off to look at the information she had received via email on the Saltscapes Expo. We were very disappointed to realize that we can't go (well, at least I can't) because the date is April 30, May 1 and 2. We were sure it was the weekend before. We'll just have to try again next year. But we couldn't figure out how we got the date wrong. On Saturday afternoon I pulled out the November/December issue of Saltscapes and it contains a full page ad, instructing their readers to mark their calendars and save the date for the 2010 Saltscapes Expo - April 23, 24 and 25. I have no idea when the date got changed, but it sure is a good thing we looked at the website. We would have been pretty annoyed to have gone over and it wasn't on. I think I'll give them a call today and find out just what happened. I can't imagine we are the only ones who planned to travel that weekend.
Saturday was a busy day at home - just tidying, cleaning, laundry, and of course an afternoon nap. Bernice Kelly called me in the morning and said "I need something from you". It turns out she was baking a cake and didn't realize she didn't have enough eggs. So she came down and picked up two eggs, and we had a little chat. Not long after she left, Brenda stopped in. She had been to Mount Stewart to put up posters about Dave's party on Saturday night, and dropped in for a tea on her way home. I was also able to offer her some delicious chocolate muffins with cream cheese filling, that she'd given me to take home the night before. Saturday night was quiet and I just watched a movie on TV.
I got up early on Sunday morning and did a bit more cleaning, some of the ickky jobs - like taking everything out of the fridge and scrubbing down the whole inside. But it was nice to get that job done. It was really windy all weekend so working outside wasn't really an option. There was some thought of going kayaking on Sunday but it was just too breezy. Too bad cause it seems that some canoes have beat us out to the river this year. The up side of the gusts is that the missing crazy carpet has returned home. I was driving down the road on Sunday afternoon, and saw something bright red out in the field. It was unmistakable, and it had also not been there on Friday. So I thought I'd better go and get it right then or it would be gone when I get back. So I parked on the side of the road, a brief trek into the field, and it's now back home again.
Brenda called me around 10:30 and we decided to go into town to the Home Show at the Civic Centre. While we were there they had a cheese tasting demo. So we sat down and got to sample six varieties of cheese. We were also directed to a website that would tell us what wines to serve with what cheeses. So it was totally worth the $5.00 admission fee! (Would have been $15 in Ontario)
After leaving the Home Show, we went over to Victoria Park and went for a walk for almost an hour. We walked along the boardwalk and then through neighbourhood streets to get back. It was quite windy on the boardwalk but the sun was shining and we were dressed for it. But once we got away from the water, and sheltered by houses, the layers quickly started to come off. It was quite warm in the sun, and away from the wind.
We had to get back because we were helping at the Rec Centre with a hockey banquet. Another good evening was had by all, but we were glad to leave at 9:30 to head home. It had been a busy weekend. Now it's back to the real world again.
I can't believe it's Friday already. This week seems to have just flown by. It's chillier this morning, with frost on the car, and the sun was shining when I left home. But by the time I got to town, it was really cloudy and dull. The temperature is about 3 at 7:30 but it's supposed to go up to 14 today with a mix of sun and cloud, so that's not a bad way to end off the week.
I don't have to go to town in the morning. It seems weird to not have a quilting class to go to. I think they're done with classes now until the fall. It will be good to get up early and get right into some house stuff. There are a few areas that I've been neglecting and now I have no excuse to not get at them. The fact that I have company next weekend helps to motivate as well.
I typically leave the house a little before 7:00 which puts me down to the bridge around 7:20. As a rule there is very little traffic, and I can usually just merge right onto the highway. For whatever reason, this morning there must have been at least 10 cars coming across the bridge, that I had to wait for, and my first thought, was, wow look at the heavy traffic this morning. Then as I was crossing the bridge, I realized that I've become somewhat acclimatized to life here, where 5 cars can constitute a traffic jam. It seems like a million years ago I was navigating the 401 on a daily basis, from Brampton to Toronto and back.
Now, I don't even give a seconds consideration to attending something in Summerside because, gosh, it would take me an hour to get there. So why would I even consider it? It would have to be something truly special to make me drive that far. Yet we never gave a seconds thought to attending a concert in downtown Toronto on a week night. I remember a couple of years ago, I bought Lloyd tickets for a concert at Roy Thompson Hall on a week night. It was in December and the drive from Guelph to Toronto was quite fine, but by the time we got out of the concert hall, it was snowing quite heavily. It took about 3 hours to get home in zero visibility and heavy snow.
Now I won't drive an hour to Summerside without an extremely good reason. On the other hand, I have no problem driving out to Souris, which takes about as long. But that usually involves a beach or something equally splendid! Not that we have to drive an hour to get to the beach - that would also be insane. Here I'm literally 15 minutes from Lakeside Beach, which is great.
I was never a beach person in Ontario, because the only real beaches are Sauble or Wasaga, and that involves a 2 to 3 hour drive to get there, in bumper to bumper traffic. That just doesn't make any sense to me, never did. But now I can go whenever I want, at any time of year. But then now that I live here, I don't tend to do the things that tourists do when they visit, like go to the beach. I would much rather go on a chilly day, or off season, when it's deserted and no one is there. There's something very calming about walking alone on a deserted beach.
Now having said that, we are not adverse to driving to Halifax for the day, which we have done. I've also just learned from a co-worker that there are a couple of great Farmer's Markets in Moncton. So that might be an early Saturday morning trip some weekend.
As I'm sitting here, a young man has just come up to the counter at Timothy's who obviously works in a kitchen somewhere, because he's wearing the unmistakable checked pants that all kitchen cooks wear. I have to admit I do miss those days of not having to give a seconds thought to what to wear to work. You just get up, get showered and throw on the same clothes every day. I will have to get my summer clothes out this year if I'm still at the University for much longer. Last year I don't think I even unpacked them as I really didn't wear anything anywhere other than chef clothes to work, and jeans or sweats at home. This year may be different but time will tell.
It's not going to be that warm today, but the sun was shining on the water as I crossed the Hillsborough Bridge this morning, and it's about 7 degrees, so it's still pretty good for this time of year. Last night it was raining when I left work, and rained for most of the evening, but it had stopped by this morning. But the house was damp and chilly so I lit the fire in the wood stove. It had been out since Friday.
I'm going to have to find things to do in the evenings pretty soon. The TV season is coming to a close on lots of the shows I typically make an effort to watch, and we'll soon be in to all re-runs. But then once it's daylight really late, we may be able to get some kayaking in during the early evenings. Now that I'm not working the afternoons at the golf course, it will free up more time. Of course once it's warmer and I can plant some flowers and a little garden, I will have lots to do when I get home.
I'm going to need to rent a roto-tiller to plow things up but maybe I'll wait and do that when Lloyd is here the long weekend in May to help me with it. I can do the tilling, it's just the pick up and taking back in the truck I might have difficulty with. He wants to cut wood while he's here that weekend so I'll need to get that ordered soon. I remember last year it took a while to get it delivered, so I now know to allow lots of time.
I can hardly believe it's Thursday already. Next weekend Jana arrives on Saturday. I'm going to see if I can get Monday the 19th off. It shouldn't be a problem. Tracey is pretty good about these things. As long as there's someone there to cover the phone it's usually fine. Kim is not leaving on her holidays until later in the week, and my student, Brandi, starts full time for the summer that day, so we are well covered. I'm not sure what we are going to do while she's here as most things will still be closed, but I think we'll go up to Cavendish and look around, and if the weather is nice, I can show her some of our great beaches. There may be a trip to a pub or two, who knows. Of course we will have to have some Cows ice cream. I'll see what else Brenda suggests for touring around.
Then the following weekend Brenda and I are going to Halifax for the weekend to the Saltscapes Expo. Which reminds me, I was supposed to email George Brandy's wife, Ineke, before we go. I will do that this morning. I just found her card in my wallet that she gave me at Frank's funeral.
We haven't done a Friday Feast in quite a while, so I will have to consult with Brenda today and see what we're doing. I have an idea that might work, but it will require some of her biscuits !
This morning it's overcast and 3 degrees - much more seasonal. We got totally spoiled on the weekend but we knew it wasn't here to stay. It's going to rain today, and for the next few days by the sounds of things. But we probably need it.
I talked to Brenda last night and they had a great trip. Now we are really back to normal. Everyone is where they are supposed to be, and the weather is also where it's supposed to be. The only thing that's not quite right is the dark empty store. It seems strange to drive by and not see 4 or 5 cars there in the morning. Brenda and the others are busy organizing Dave's party. There will likely be a good turnout. It's too bad Lloyd won't be here but I think he's in South Africa at that time. Guess some choices you just have to make.
On the weekend when I was outside in the back yard, I noticed a large hole in the ground. It almost looks like a sink hole - it's about two feet across and a good 10 inches deep. So as I was raking up the sawdust that was left from cutting the wood last year (and there was a LOT of that) I was filling in the hole, and packing it down. I also pulled up some sod in another patch to plant some rhubarb I got in town on Saturday. So I put that stuff in there too. This morning as I was packing my lunch, I happened to look out the kitchen window and the two large dogs from next door were digging for all they were worth in that same hole. From the looks of it they've just about got it dug out to where it was before I started filling it in. There must be something in there, probably mice or something, but they've got several holes dug all around the property. Good think Cooper wasn't out there with them or he would have been right in the thick of things too. I don't know if that's how the hole got there in the first place -I didn't think so as there was no dirt on the sides to indicate it had been dug out, so it's a mystery.
This brings me to mind of something I will have to adjust my thinking on. I've noticed that the next door neighbour takes her ashes, and what not, across the road and dumps them into the ditch. I saw her taking a wheel barrow full of stuff on the weekend, and doing the same thing. My initial thought is, why would you dump that stuff on someone elses property when you have lots of space of your own to put it. But it has been brought to my attention that this is a normal practice here. I suppose it's not a big deal if it's organic materials you're dumping. When I thought about it I realized why I found this practice strange.
Several years ago, Lloyd and I bought a brand new house in Guelph. It was a new subdivision and most of the neighbours all moved in around the same time. We got to know some of them and we were all working on putting in flower beds, etc. One neighbour and I were always trying to find somewhere to put the sod pieces that were taken up, along with any other yard materials. But when you only have a lot the size of a postage stamp, you're limited where you can put it. At that time, there were still open spaces to the south of our development so under cloak of darkness, after the kids were in bed, we would load up our wheel barrows and take them over to the construction site and dump our organic materials, because we would have been in such trouble if we got caught. We felt like such criminals for doing this but what choice did we have. And really, it was just grass and dirt, but when you live in an urban area, you really are limited. So, some habits die hard I suppose. I realize now that it really doesn't make any difference to the environment where you put the grass and the dirt. I guess it just takes a while to get over feeling guilty about something, even though there really isn't anything to feel guilty about.
I have a large pile of logs and branches on my front yard - I think someone would notice if I dumped those across the street!
Well, it looks like my job is secure for yet another month. It's being extended to the end of May. I was talking with Tracey yesterday and apparently when Linda comes back it will be only for an hour or two a day until she is back full time. So I will be kept on until she's back full time, so who knows how long it's going to take. I can do data entry when she's working and then go back to her desk when she's gone. It will be a bit weird but we'll just have to work it out. Yesterday I was also told I will be taking on some added duties in terms of our data base. This will free up Rosie to take on something else. You know what they say s--t flows down hill - and the admin is usually at the bottom of that hill! But that's okay - the more tasks I can take over, the better it's going to be in the long run. I was just looking at job postings online yesterday and was going to drop off some resume's after work but I'll have to wait for now. I've applied for numerous jobs online and I've not heard a single thing from any of them. Some of them give you the option of dropping off your resume in person, so I guess when the time comes that may be a better option. It will at least give me an opportunity to speak to someone directly. Perhaps that will make a difference.
I've been sitting here for 20 minutes having problems with my computer. The mouse works but only on some things. So I tried the mouse pad - same thing. Some things work, some don't. I could open my blog, but couldn't sign in. I was just about the call Lloyd to pick his brain, and then I thought, the first thing he's going to ask is if I turned it off and then turned it back on again. Duh! So of course, after doing that, the thing works. You would think after having that same question asked multiple times, I would think to do that first! I hate it when he's always right.
Anyway, I'm back. It was a great weekend weather wise. Yesterday was yet again another beautiful day. I cleaned out my sun porch, finally, and what a great space it is. It was quite windy early in the morning and a little chilly, but the sun streaming in those side windows was glorious. So, I brought my little patio table inside and sat out there to drink my morning coffee. I may have to just leave it that way. I opened the door at the front of the porch and you can see the river so I had sun and a great view! I think I might eventually paint it white in there. The wood is pretty beat up and old, and needs a face lift. If I painted it white, then I could put up some pretty floral curtains and it would be a lovely space, especially in the spring and fall, when you want to sit outside, but it's just too chilly, or there are too many bugs! I may be on to something here.
I was talking to Will Van Gaal yesterday, and I have two words for his sister Meghan - EAR PLUGS! I understand she had to resort to sleeping in the bathroom to escape the music of her father's snoring. Welcome to my world! I share your pain. I can recall sleeping in a bathtub in San Francisco, as there was no where else to go. Lloyd always snores, and I've worn ear plugs to bed for years. But I recommend the pink ones. They are contoured to fit inside your ear better. The cylindrical yellow ones are not so comfortable to wear all night long. Trust me, I know my ear plugs!
I went over to visit with Bernice Kelly last night. She is an interesting lady. She knows the history of my house so well, and she has some interesting stories to tell. I haven't seen her since Christmas and she stopped by one day when Patti and the kids were here but we weren't home. She dropped off some baby spider plants, and now that they've rooted, I have them in pots. Hopefully they will grow.
I finished the borders on my quilt on Sunday. I spent the entire afternoon working on it. Now I just have the binding around the outside to finish, and some hand sewing on the back. The hand sewing I will finish on week nights when I'm watching TV. Then I will finish the binding and call it done!
Well, my time is up for this morning, so I'm off to work. It's going to be another nice day today, although maybe cloudy this morning, but it's supposed to get up to around 14 or 15. Not too bad for the beginning of April!
Brenda and Bernie get back today, so I look forward to hearing all about their trip! I'm sure they'll be glad to get home.
Okay, it's not quite like southern Ontario, but the sun is shining first thing this morning. What a difference it makes to your day! Yesterday morning was more of the same fog and not quite drizzle but a fine mist. Good thing I had to be inside at my class yesterday. But the sun did come out and it got up to 19 degrees . Today is supposed to be 20. It is a little breezy, but not as much as yesterday morning was. My yard work isn't going as well as I'd hoped. It's progressing slowly. Part of the problem is I keep finding other things to do. When I went to my class yesterday, it was just to get instructions on where to go next with my new project, so I didn't actually do any sewing. Then when I got home I made up my mind that I need to finish the first project before I can start in again on the second one. So I got out all my sewing stuff and worked on the borders. They are almost just as much work as the body of the thing. I have the bottom done, only three more sides yet to go. But then I'm machine quilting it as I go so when the last border is on, it will be done, other than the binding that goes around the outside. I'll get back to that again later but for now I'm sitting outside at the picnic table with my coffee watching my bonfire, take care of some of the pile of branches I have to dispose of. I did that on Friday night too, and it was nice to have the first bonfire of the year! While I was sitting by the fire, I called Lloyd. He made some comment about me calling frequently, and that must be because I had no friends to play with! It's okay, I have some sticks and matches, and he knows how I love to play with fire!
Well, time to put more sticks on the fire. Happy Easter Everyone!
